Can Cats Have Turmeric? The Easiest Check Before Committing
Cats can have turmeric as the ground rhizome of Curcuma longa L., a spice the U.S. Food and Drug Administration lists as generally recognized as safe for human food in 21 CFR 182.10 and as a color additive in 21 CFR 73.600. That listing is a human-food identity, not a feline dose. The United States Pharmacopeia monograph for powdered turmeric requires not less than 3.0 percent curcuminoids on the anhydrous basis. USDA FoodData Central records 1 teaspoon of ground turmeric as 3 grams (FDC 172231, “Spices, turmeric, ground”). A 3-gram teaspoon of USP-grade powder therefore carries at least 90 milligrams of curcuminoids. Kitchen turmeric has not been shown to treat feline pain or to deworm cats. The easiest check before committing is the same one I run on a twenty-five-kilo sack: read the certificate of analysis for curcuminoid percent, weigh the cat, and ask a veterinarian whether any studied formulation belongs on that mass.
I repack bulk sacks into retail bags. I once ran a pallet of tapioca starch out under an arrowroot label because the sack said arrowroot and I believed the sack. The certificate is read now before the sack is opened. The kitchen jar and the veterinary extract share a plant name. They do not share an assay or a feeding interval.
What does a turmeric certificate actually report?
Powdered turmeric is Curcuma longa rhizome reduced to a fine or very fine powder. The USP Dietary Supplement monograph sets the curcuminoid floor at 3.0 percent on the anhydrous basis, as the sum of curcumin, desmethoxycurcumin, and bisdesmethoxycurcumin. Codex Standard CXS 359-2024 sets a lower coloring-power floor for powdered or ground dried turmeric: not less than 2 percent curcuminoids on the dry basis, with moisture not more than 10 percent in that style.
Those two numbers already tell you why two retail bags differ. A lot that just clears Codex at 2 percent is a different ingredient from a lot written at 3.5 percent on a USP-style HPLC assay, even when both are labeled “turmeric.” Certificates also carry mesh; a 60-mesh powder and an 80-mesh powder pour differently.
Extract is a third product. The EFSA Panel on Additives and Products or Substances used in Animal Feed, in its 2020 opinion on turmeric extract as a sensory additive (EFSA Journal 2020;18(6):e06146), described an extract specified at not less than 90 percent curcuminoids. Nine commercial batches averaged 96.68 percent total curcuminoids (range 94.88 to 97.68 percent), with curcumin itself averaging 77.02 percent of the extract. Raynaud and colleagues coated a phospholipid extract (Meriva) specified at least 90 percent total curcuminoids onto complete cat food. That is not the jar on the spice rack.
Why a kitchen teaspoon is not a cat dose
USDA FoodData Central’s household measure for ground turmeric is 1 teaspoon, 3 grams. At the USP powder floor of 3.0 percent curcuminoids, that teaspoon contains 90 milligrams of curcuminoids. At the Codex powder floor of 2 percent, the same spoon contains 60 milligrams. Those are human culinary serving masses, not a veterinary schedule.
Cat mass is not a teaspoon either. Campigotto and colleagues, in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association in 2019, modelled body weight against age in 19,015,888 cats from North American clinics. Mixed-breed cats reached maximum mean body weight at eight years of age. In the 2005 referent year, mean weight among eight-year-old cats was 6.05 kilograms for castrated males and 4.93 kilograms for spayed females. EFSA’s default cat for feed-additive maths is 3 kilograms, eating about 60 to 68 grams of complete feed a day. Raynaud’s 2026 cats were enrolled between 2.5 and 6 kilograms, with group means near 4.2 kilograms on day 0.
EFSA’s 2020 turmeric-extract opinion applied an extra uncertainty factor of 5 for cats because of their unusually low capacity for glucuronidation, citing Court and Greenblatt’s 1997 microsome work in Biochemical Pharmacology. For a 3-kilogram cat eating 68 grams of diet a day, the Panel’s sensory-additive limit of 15 milligrams of extract per kilogram of complete feed, with a calculated maximum safe concentration of 22 milligrams per kilogram of feed for cats, corresponds to about 0.5 milligrams of turmeric extract per kilogram of body weight per day. That figure was extrapolated from a rat reproductive NOAEL of 250 to 320 milligrams per kilogram of body weight per day. It is not a pinch from a kitchen jar.
Ninety milligrams of curcuminoids from one USP teaspoon, given to a 4.2-kilogram cat, is about 21 milligrams of curcuminoids per kilogram of body weight. That sits in a different order of magnitude from EFSA’s 0.5 milligram-per-kilogram sensory figure. I do not convert a human spoon into a cat dose.
What feline studies measured for absorption and dose interval
Ng and colleagues published the first feline pharmacokinetics of curcumin in BioMed Research International in 2020. Fourteen young domestic shorthair cats, 1.5 to 3.5 kilograms, received 250 milligrams per kilogram of unformulated curcumin or of curcumin-encapsulated chitosan nanoparticles, once daily or twice daily twelve hours apart. After a single oral dose of unformulated curcumin, mean maximum plasma concentration was 219.6 nanograms per milliliter at 3 hours. The nanoparticle form reached 485.0 nanograms per milliliter at 4 hours. On the twice-daily schedule, unformulated curcumin peaked at 241.1 nanograms per milliliter at 4 hours; the nanoparticles peaked at 621.5 nanograms per milliliter at 4 hours. Ng’s 2018 thesis reports the relative oral bioavailability of the nanoparticle form as 301 percent compared with unformulated curcumin. Absolute oral bioavailability was not calculated; there was no intravenous arm.
Doses of 50 milligrams per kilogram and 100 milligrams per kilogram left plasma curcumin below the HPLC detection limit of 25 nanograms per milliliter at every sampling point. If 100 milligrams per kilogram of the research powder did not clear the assay, a dusting on wet food is not a measured plasma exposure.
Dose interval in that study was once daily, or twice daily twelve hours apart, with sampling through 24 hours. Raynaud’s 2026 food trial fed the phospholipid extract once daily for 120 days. Neither paper tested “whenever the cat looks sore.” A certificate that does not state a schedule is not a schedule.
How often did cats have problems on a studied extract?
Raynaud and colleagues ran a randomized, blinded, 120-day tolerance trial in 45 healthy adult domestic shorthaired cats, published in Animals in April 2026. Fifteen cats received an AAFCO-style complete dry diet with no added extract. Fifteen received the same diet at 660 parts per million total curcuminoids. Fifteen received 1040 parts per million, fed once daily. Mean weekly food intake sat near 42 to 54 grams a day.
Thirty-nine of 45 cats completed the study. Vomiting instances were 32 in control, 31 in the 660 ppm group, and 31 in the 1040 ppm group. Mean adverse events per animal did not differ from control (p = 0.888 and 1.000). Some adverse events were recorded in 13 of 15 control cats, 14 of 15 cats on 660 ppm, and 13 of 15 cats on 1040 ppm, mostly mild. One cat on 1040 ppm died suddenly on day 90; necropsy did not show lesions attributed to the diet, and the authors judged a link to the extract unlikely.
Human supplement frequency is a different ledger. NIH LiverTox (last update 16 June 2025) estimates clinically apparent liver injury from turmeric in people as probably very rare, in the range of 1 in 10,000 to 1 in 100,000 persons exposed, typically after 1 to 4 months, likelihood score A. The Drug-Induced Liver Injury Network published ten U.S. turmeric-associated cases in 2023 (Halegoua-DeMarzio and colleagues), including one death and HLA-B*35:01 in seven of ten. I will not paste a human incidence onto a cat.
How turmeric powder, turmeric extract, and ginger differ for cats
Related searches pair turmeric with ginger because both are kitchen rhizomes in the ginger family. They do not share a dose, an evidence base, or an interaction profile in cats. The FDA’s GRAS spice list in 21 CFR 182.10 names both: turmeric as Curcuma longa L., ginger as Zingiber officinale Rosc.
EFSA split the two applications. Turmeric extract as a sensory additive was judged safe at 15 milligrams per kilogram of complete feed for all species, with a calculated maximum safe concentration of 22 milligrams per kilogram of feed for cats. Ginger essential oil was judged safe at 20 milligrams per kilogram of complete feed for most species (EFSA Journal 2020;18(6):e06147). Ginger oleoresin was limited to 1 milligram per kilogram of complete feed for pets. In EFSA’s oleoresin table, a 3-kilogram cat eating 60 grams of feed has a calculated maximum safe oleoresin concentration of 7.4 milligrams per kilogram of feed; the Panel still set the proposed pet use at 1 milligram per kilogram. Gingerols and shogaols, not curcuminoids, drive that limit.
Turmeric has a feline plasma curve (Ng, 2020) and a 45-cat, 120-day complete-food tolerance trial (Raynaud, 2026). Ginger, in the feed-additive file I can verify, does not.

Two culinary roots on the same GRAS list do not share a feline milligram, a plasma curve, or a 120-day kibble trial.
Can cats have turmeric and black pepper?
Human recipes add black pepper because piperine is sold as a bioavailability booster. Ng’s feline study used chitosan nanoparticles, not piperine, and 50 to 100 milligrams per kilogram of curcumin stayed below 25 nanograms per milliliter. I have not found a feline paper that measures curcumin plus piperine the way Ng measured curcumin plus chitosan.
The human liver-injury file is not silent on pepper. In the DILIN series of ten turmeric cases, chemical analysis of seven products confirmed turmeric in all seven; three also contained piperine. LiverTox notes that highly bioavailable curcumin forms, including piperine combinations, figure in many reports.
Black pepper is Piper nigrum, listed separately on 21 CFR 182.10. Adding it to a cat because a human capsule says “BioPerine” mixes turmeric powder, a pepper alkaloid, and a marketing claim.
Does turmeric deworm cats?
No published feline trial I can verify uses turmeric powder or curcumin extract as an anthelmintic with a species diagnosis, an egg-count endpoint, and a licensed comparator.
Raynaud’s cats were dewormed the week before acclimation with a tablet containing 20 milligrams of praziquantel and 230 milligrams of pyrantel, dosed at one tablet per 4 kilograms of body weight. Turmeric was the test article in the food, not the wormer. If a cat has parasites, the certificate you want is the one on the anthelmintic, after a fecal test.
Can turmeric help a cat in pain?
Culinary turmeric is marketed for human joints. I do not have a randomized feline osteoarthritis trial of kitchen powder with a validated pain score. Raynaud’s study was a safety test of extract in food, not an efficacy test for lameness. Ng’s pharmacokinetic work was aimed at feline infectious peritonitis virus, not at arthritis. A sore cat needs a diagnosis. Do not substitute kitchen turmeric for veterinary analgesia.
Turmeric extract for healthy adult cats was tolerated at 1040 ppm total curcuminoids in that 120-day complete-diet trial. That sentence does not license a teaspoon. Benefits attributed to kitchen turmeric in cats remain unproven in the papers above.
What is the easiest check before you commit?
I do not open a sack on the name printed in ink. I open it on the certificate. The same three lines decide whether turmeric belongs in the plan.
- Read the certificate of analysis for curcuminoid percent, and for whether the bag is powder, oleoresin, or extract, before the seal is broken.
- Weigh the cat in kilograms on a scale, not by guessing against a breed average.
- Ask the veterinarian which studied formulation and which interval, if any, belong on that mass, and whether the cat’s other medicines make even a studied extract a bad idea.
If the bag has no assay, it is not a dose. If the cat has not been weighed, the milligrams per kilogram are fiction. Committing first is how a sack of tapioca leaves the building under the wrong name.
